A Photographer's Wishlist at KAMP
As many KAMPers already know, one of our co-owners is a freelance photographer and photography instructor. He is also a (happily) suffering gear addict, and this is his take on what to buy at KAMP for your next photo adventure. If you are in a shopping mode, all of the pics click back to their product page on our web store.
The image at top is of the TOPO Field Bag, an excellent daily carry option for the crushing-it photographer that's as at home in the city as on the trails. It is a take on the classic outdoorsman's field bag, the one used for fishing tackle or for shell casings, but updated for camera gear. The Field Bag provides an additional stabilizing strap that's great for bike commutes, and its weather-resistant, 1680 denier ballistic nylon shell means that its ready for some serious wear and tear.
Another great dedicated camera conveying option is the TOPO Camera Cube (pictured below, and available also in black).
This heavy-duty insert, made of 1000D Cordura, converts any of the entire range of TOPO bags (and others) into a camera-carrying workhorse, though I'd personally recommend pairing it with the beautiful and sleek, TOPO Commuter Briefcase, which just arrived in-store last week (pictures don't do it justice, you've got to feel the leather). The Commuter Briefcase can be converted from a shoulder bag into a backpack for those long hauls between sets.
Moving on from the "created for photography" category, there are so many items at KAMP that can still work perfectly for photography, and personally, I prefer using these whenever possible because they don't scream "I'm a photographer" with their design (why do designers think that all photographers prefer a boxy, techie look?).
First up, is an accessory made by LA-based menswear purveyors SWRVE, a company catering superb, handcrafted goods geared toward those who prefer to get around on two wheels instead of four. They have a prohibition on e-commerce for retailers at the moment, so you'll need to come in-store to check out the clothing (I've been nonstop wearing their Indigo Cordura Skinny Jeans since we got them in), hats and these amazing stationary Tool Rolls that we stock from them.
We have the Tool Rolls in both Crimson and Charcoal Gray. The fabric is a DWR treated 500D Cordura, so it is both durable and water repellent. The Roll was designed to accommodate essential tools that you need to keep with you for cycling, but as you can see below, it doubles as a great accessory wallet for a gamut of photography goodies; one that fashionably puts to shame the garbage bin sacks that camera bag makers put out for the same purpose.
check out that Biolite gadget further down this post
The heavy duty clasp ensures a secure fit on the underside of your bike seat, for which it was designed, but it also lashes perfectly to a range of pack webbing like Molle, daisy chains, and even the pig nose leather patches that are a staple of the TOPO line.
BTW, that pack it is lashed to is the TOPO Travel Bag, "the antithesis of the usual brick on wheels; it's a run for the bus, jump on a plane, walk the globe, adventure traveler." AND, we have it in stock! It is also in the same product family (fabric/aesthetic/etc.) as the TOPO Field Bag that kicked off this post, so if you've got some serious traveling to do, or just want an excellent option for your camera and extended kit, look no further than this rad boy:
Moving on, Aura USA is a small company of climbing and outdoor enthusiasts out of the Mile-High City. Working with them as a retailer means personal exchanges with the company's Founder, CEO and Lead Designer, and is one of the best things about being a store of our size- you don't just carry a line, you sometimes join a family.
Aura makes a range of options geared toward climbing, with the slogan of "Adventure More", their Chalk Bags (we have them in both denim and sushi print) make excellent, affordable lens bags for the photographer on the go.
A drawstring closure ensures that they lenses won't plop out, even big ones like these 11-20mm f/2.8 and 105mm f/2.8. The belt loops allow the Bags to be attached with something as simple as the belt that is holding up your pantaloons, carabiners, many hiking pack hip belts, or the gatekeepers straps that are commonplace throughout traditional hiking packs and camera bags. The Chalk Bags are spacious enough to accommodate a small mirrorless camera and lens, and they are fleece-lined so no worries about scratches. Having one of these little guys onboard adds a splash of color to your camera flow, and means that that extra focal length(s) is always at hand.
Additional gear to consider (look for more in-depth coverage in future posts):
1. Word Notebooks Standard Memorandum 2018. Keep those photo appointments!
2. Fjallraven Traveller's Jacket. Available in both men's and women's, this jacket is perfect for the showers we've been getting lately, light and ventilated enough for those cool Spring hikes, and with plenty of pockets for photo goodies.
3. Biolite PowerLight Mini. A powerful light that stands upright or clips onto a pocket or pack strap with ease, and comes with enough built-in charge to power up your smartphone (so you are always ready to share those BTS). We have them in several colors.
4. Biolite Charge 20 USB Bank. This little USB Bank, pictured in the image of the stationary Tool Roll above, features 5200 mAh of power that will dependably keep your action cams and phones charged- all in a dunk-proof container!
