KAMP HIKE FOUR: Fort Belle Fontaine County Park

-----
Recently, KAMP Counselor Mandi led our fourth hike at a gem of the St. Louis County Parks system, Fort Belle Fontaine County Park. Site of one of the oldest forts west of the Mississippi River, Lewis and Clark set off on their Corps of Discovery from this location. During the WPA era, the Fort (long abandoned) was reimagined as a summer resort area, and that's when the beautiful stone staircase shown above was installed. It's great place for a pleasant, mostly easygoing hike and being able to soak up so much history is just an added bonus! For more info on the history of the site, check out this article by Photo Flood Saint Louis.

Our next hike will again feature a historical location- the site of a bone bed that was among the first to prove the co-existence of human beings and mastodons. And (since it is steamy summertime in STL) there is even a spring-fed stream to cool your heels! See you there.
